Common Chiropractic Myths

  • Your bones grind against each other during an adjustment

    One of the most well-known styles of Chiropractic techniques involves the audible sound you may hear during the adjustment. It is actually the release of CO2 gas from the opening of the joint space that creates the popping sound.

    It’s called Boyle’s Law in Physics. We do not crack bones, pop bones, crunch them or bang them together. In my realm of practice I focus on the individual; my technique varies from patient to patient.

  • Once you go to a Chiropractor, you always have to go

    The care plan will be specifically designed to suit the individuals’ needs at present and will end when the problem has been resolved. It is important to recognize the stage at which the patients present themselves, as this will change the type of protocol and most certainly the length of protocol.

    A patient in an acute phase lasting less than 6 weeks will have a much shorter protocol than one far more chronic, recurrent or postural in nature. I find educating my patients on their condition most helpful in order for them to make an informed decision regarding their stand point on whether to choose Chiropractic care or not.

    Most of my patients choose to continue to come for regular check ups after their care protocol has been completed; for prevention, postural maintenance, further correction, or simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

    This varies from person to person, goal to goal, and activity to activity. Perhaps you’re the weekend warrior, or the desk cadet, the iron man in the making or the Thursday afternoon gardener.

    Chiropractic sessions can be anywhere from twice a month to four times per year. The choice is yours. “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine,” says Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize recipient for brain research.

    The above statement forms a part of my bodies longevity, and Chiropractic adjustments form part of the mobility of my spine, then regular Chiropractic adjustments improve my health, why not incorporate them into my strive towards a sustained health?!

  • Children don’t need Chiropractic

    Being born is hard work, there is a lot of pressure and force exerted on your baby.  Current studies demonstrate that 90% of newborns suffer birth trauma and associated strain through the neck and cranial areas following birth.

    Following on this, a baby’s spine lengthens 50% by the time they reach a year, and begin developing spinal curves.

    The spine and its curves are necessary for movement, balance, upright posture, shock absorption as well as protection and insurance of a healthy functioning nervous system.

    Should initial birth trauma, get left undetected or left uncorrected, this may continue to impact your baby’s spinal growth and development, reducing the healthy function of their nervous system.

    The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, and it processes everything that your body does.

    When adjusting a newborn, a skilled chiropractor will only use the amount of pressure that you would use to comfortably push on your eye. Simple, safe, effective!

  • Chiropractic is only for Back pain

    Chiropractors are skilled focused and specific adjustors; Not only for the spine, but also for the full kinetic chain. I explain to all my patients, that I work the body like a rubik’s cube…one move will affect the next, and perhaps affect three moves down the line. For example an imbalance of the knee can affect the spine as well as the foot.

    Another thought to keep in mind is flow. The body is predominantly fluid. We work on flow and rhythms. Breathing, lymphatic drainage and even cerebrospinal fluid flow from the brain to the sacrum and vice versa. Imagine a blocked pipe at one end, the overflow will automatically affect the other end. Is it so strange then, to imagine that a blockage in the pelvis and sacrum can express itself in a migraine?!

    Why does your back hurt when you have stomach ache? Why do you have a head ache and ear pain when there was a tooth abscess you had no idea was there? Why do you have back ache when you don’t even know you have a bladder infection?

    The idea is to be open to the fact that the body is a whole being. An inter/intra connected eco-system.

  • I can crack my own back

    By trying to crack your own back, you may actually be causing more problems. First off, it is difficult to achieve – there is a reason chiropractors have seven intensive years of training! More importantly, however, is that proper positioning is essential for a chiropractic ADJUSTMENT – this is near impossible to accomplish on your own.

    When you attempt to MANIPULATE yourself, any joint that is capable of moving can achieve a “pop” sound, which makes most people think that their self-manipulation was successful; however, this does not mean that you have restored the proper movement to the right joint! Along with the “pop” comes the release of endorphins – giving you a brief sense of euphoria and making you feel that you have cured your problem.

    Have you felt this before? Unfortunately, you have also probably experienced that the initial pain or discomfort will likely return approximately 20 minutes later. If you continue to adjust yourself every 20 minutes for relief, your joints will become hypermobile (have too much motion) and, thus, unstable.

    This instability will lead to more muscular hypertrophy and tension as well as more serious problems down the road.

    I highly advise against self-manipulation!

    As a chiropractor, I see another chiropractor WEEKLY to make sure my spine is in top shape – even with my extensive training, I don’t adjust myself!

  • There is no scientific proof that chiropractic works

    Over the years, there have been hundreds of studies proving the validity of chiropractic in improving the health of millions of people all over the world! Studies done over the past 5 years have proven the positive benefits of increased immune function, general wellbeing, and increased brain functioning, too! The science is there – all you have to do is look! The ICL (Index to Chiropractic Literature) is a gateway to the literature published in chiropractic journals – I highly recommend this as a source for learning.
